APA and WPA Meetings

This is a permanent record of a MPC Blog posting

Auckland Petanque players meet.

Tomorrow night (Friday Oct. 27) Petanque players in Auckland will meet at Herne Bay to discuss what they believe to be the best selection process for New Zealand. Despite all the confusion it does simply come down to whether they want individual selection as we have now, or have a system of team selection, similar to what is proposed here. Good luck.

The Wellington region never voted on any options in the end. At the WPA meeting of August 17, clubs were asked to discuss this proposal and to come back with comments. However, nothing eventuated at the WPA meeting of October 19. I hope Auckland will be more proactive - with a resolution at the end of their meeting.

On Friday night we had about 20 attend the meeting in Auckland. This is quite a good turn out, with a good cross section of players.

I think everyone had the opportunity to have their say, be it a bit rowdy at times.

Joanne did a good job of chairing the meeting and the object was made clear from the start - to try and put a selection proposal / framework to PNZ as an Auckland proposal.

I believe this was achieved, with the essential points of a proposal passed either unanimously or with a significant majority.

It's propbably not right that I say what that proposal is, as it will be drafted and circulated to those attending first.

But I do think that the meeting was successful, a good proposal was outlined. I hope the players in other regions are also given the chance to discuss this important issue before the PNZ Council meeting in November. - Michael E.

Thanks for that Michael. It is great that the Auckland players are showing us the way (again). An at times "rowdy" meeting is so much better compared to what happened in Wellington. At least Petanque players in Auckland are alive and kicking. It will be great (in due course) to get a final copy of the proposal discussed at the Friday Oct. 27 Auckland meeting. Update 04/12/06: I never got to see this final Auckland proposal - do not know if it went to PNZ. -Tom.

All of this is a far cry from what happened at our recent WPA meeting. From what I hear, it seems that an attempt to discuss this agenda topic was essentially scuttled by some suggesting that there where "other proposals" out there and not everyone had seen them. The people present where quickly convinced (or should I say confused) and that was the end of that item - no discussion!.

All of this is just so absurd. Especially considering that the selection proposal had been circulating, and members asked to come back with comments. "Michael Emerson has prepared a discussion document for the selection of national teams and Margret Fleck asked that clubs discuss this and bring back comments for the next meeting.".

Quite frankly it's immaterial whether there are ten thousand proposals out there. It should also be clear to most that there will always be some people who have not seen something. I for one would have expected an agreement in principal - or something. The WPA has left this selection issue essentially to PNZ - after all they (PNZ) know best. How thru.

Is there a conflict of interest? Are the people running WPA, the Khandallah club and PNZ the same people? Are the WPA meetings often just rubberstamping sessions for the Khandallah/Wellington administrators (PNZ)? Is all of this becoming a waste of time and petrol?. Lots of questions again. -Tom.
