DataBase

Page history last edited by PBworks 16 years, 9 months ago

This page is here to show that despite of what some people say, there are people who have given their time and expertise as volunteers.

If you have other examples pass it on to me and I will put it up on this page. -Tom.

The database that never was

Below is a progress report (27/05/05) of the database that never was. This database was accessible via the Web (during the testing period), and ONLY people with access privileges could view, create, add and update data within it.

To establish the database it would simply be a matter for one person from each club to input the membership data into the database via the Web - many hands make light work.

Once established, one could for instance ask to see all male players in a particular part of the country between the age of 16 to 22. All this via the Web using a secure login. The database used was FileMaker Pro.

After I put a lot of work into this project it was suddenly abandoned. I never heard again from Brian and Barbara. Admittedly, I did not inquire why the project had stopped - I was dumbfounded.

I still have all the written communications between Barbara, Brian and myself.

There is of course a big difference between an Excel based address list as used by your local church or embroidery group, and a proper web based database using a dedicated application such as FileMaker Pro. Any small to medium size organisation needs a database. Ongoing analysis through proper systems is the key to sound decision making.

I have also assisted PNZ (giving written advise) with formulating nation-wide web based member surveys. Again, the same principle: one person from each club to collect and input the data. A large club like Kapiti could use three or four people to do this.

I did this work on surveys as part of a submission (27 & 28 August 2005 PNZ meeting) to PNZ. I have never received any answers, acknowledgement or anything about this work.

"....it would really do a lot more good for the sport, which they profess to be worried about, if these same people came forward, volunteered their services and helped fix the things they believe to be wrong."

Ironically (and in support of my argument), in the same document Bryan contradicts himself with this:

"....it is no wonder that a number of dedicated and passionate volunteers in our sport have felt disenfranchised by this structure, and have withdrawn their services over the last two to three years."

I leave it to the readers to decide what they think of the above statements. -Tom.

This travel agent has 25 years experience and is a petanque player to boot. He organised travel to three world champs, 1 Oceania and a trans tasman and then one day it stopped. No explanation, no apology, no thanks, nothing. Oh well!! Too bad aye!!

Graeme (obviously useless travel agent) Burnard.
