DutchArticle

Page history last edited by PBworks 15 years, 10 months ago

This is my translation of the main part of the article. I have only translated the part pertaining to petanque, and not the first part about Christian’s early professional career. Photo is of our team with the German team after Germany won 13/4 in the second round. Thanks to Rita for alerting me to this article which appeared on a Dutch website on Sep. 22, 2007. -Tom

Christian imported not only great tasting baquettes to down-under, but as an avid Petanque player he also brought his boules. Around 1993 and 1994 he put a lot of effort into the game and even became president of the New Zealand Petanque organization. According to his wife Rolinka one should see Christian as a pioneer of New Zealand Petanque. Christian not only got many people interested in the game, but also instilled a love for the game into Rolinka. With her team she became the first female champion of New Zealand. A year later she represented New Zealand at a big international tournament in New Caledonia, this tournament had participants from all over Oceania.

Rolinka is not part of the New Zealand team in Pattaya. She is here with her husband, who is the 4th player of the team, which has two players who are 73 years of age! One of them, Ron, has in recent years undergone four bypasses, has received an artificial hip and two artificial knees. As a great sportsman who has played tennis and squash at the highest level, this does not bother him at all.

Rolinka speaks Dutch pretty well without an accent has also followed the Dutch team with its below par performance, had this to say: Your national team has under performed because the players were forbidden to share the same bed with their wives / partners! At the obvious question of whether she shared the same bed with her partner, her reply was a firm “Nou en off” "absolutely", and this is why the New Zealand team has gone through to the next round and the Dutch team has not."

Finally, about her husband Christian she has this to say: “You know, he is a frenchman, il aime l’amour…!"

Thaise ontmoetingen
