Summer Interclub (Wellington region)

"....Due to player unavailability, Khandallah will now not be taking part in the inter-club competition this season. Please accept our apologies for the late notice of our withdrawal. Unfortunately, most of the competition dates conflict with other events and we are struggling to find enough players to make up a team each round. Best wishes for the competition and we will arrange for the trophy to be returned at the AGM.

Regards, Michael"

The above is an email received from Michael Rocks.

Hi Everyone

26/01 Sorry to do this to you all but due to the late withdrawal of Khandallah from the complete interclub competition, and with the default for this round from Windy Hills, a second revised draw (replacing the one sent out earlier this week) is now in effect. This means that the earlier advised byes, etc no longer apply. However, a default for the afternoon session will still apply, as will the scoring relating to this default.

I am puzzled by the fact that we have a number of clubs in Wellington that have extreme low membership. I think we have (in Wellington) at least three clubs with a membership of between 6 to 10. Is this unique to the capital, or is this also the case in other centres? Is Petanque in Wellington dying?

It can't have been an easy decision for Khandallah to pull out of the Summer Interclub (Wellington region) competition. It is akin to pulling out of a weekend tournament on day two, or after the first couple of games. ".... Unfortunately, most of the competition dates conflict with other events ....". Was this a late discovery?. Do we have too many events for the number of players in the Wellington region?

Update 30/01/07: Michael Rocks took offence to the item below. He contacted Graeme Morris and demanded that it be removed. (read about it HERE).

I am not surprised that Khandallah has defaulted from the summer league due to not having enough players. This same problem was the reason there was such a debacle over the JC competition. It is a shame that this decision was not made before the summer league tournament started, to save the draws having to be redone. Does this mean there will be more byes. The yearly calendar is out early enough for clubs to be able to plan far enough ahead. Maybe there is too much on the calendar. Maybe this is why PNZ have chosen to have their AGM in Wellington on the same weekend as the Masterton WBS tournament. This tournament is on the same weekend every year and has been on the calendar for many months, so why would PNZ choose to have their AGM that weekend. Is it because there were no alternative weekends or should I be mischievous and suggest that with a major tournament on, the number of people able to attend the AGM would be reduced and any controversy that might arise would be avoided. Sadly it is also stopping some of the top players in the region attending the WBS tournament because of their commitments with PNZ.

Graeme makes an interesting observation. A good percentage of the Khandallah members won't be able to play in the annual WBS because the WBS tournament clashes with the PNZ AGM. What is clashing with what here? Does it simply come down to what we are willing to support. Is it just a matter of which event - tournaments or meetings are more important to us, and the word "clash" is just a convenient word for washing our hands clean with?

How many PNZ regional representatives and executive members would have said: "on the date of our AGM the Masterton Petanque Club are running their long established annual WBS triples tournament - we must find another date for our AGM". This attitude of total indifference towards one of the oldest clubs in the Wellington region does not bode well for the coming year. PNZ badly needs a PR officer.

Two important events at the same time in the same region. A commemorative stamp.

02/02 The main reason why I object to PNZ holding its AGM at the same time as our Masterton WBS Triples tournament, is the complete absence of basic common courtesy by PNZ. If no other date was available, surely a simple letter to our Masterton club explaining this, would be courteous, and good PR work as well. It would show to the wider NZ membership that PNZ is aware of the national tournament calendar. That PNZ regrets its AGM falls on a date of a major long-running annual event. What we have instead is that PNZ gives the impression with its cavalier attitude, that it does not owe anyone an explanation for whatever it does or doesn't do (2006 all over again). This in turn gives the impression of a master/servant relationship. Not a good look. Not a good way of getting people to cooperate. -Tom.
