Jacques Cochonnet Cup
You can find excellent JCC statistics on this WPA page.
16/06/06 I propose that we introduce a points handicap for the “home team”. The holders of the Jacques Cochonnet Cup are at an advantage, simply by playing on their home terrain.
This idea by the way, is something I had proposed during the record time period (28 consecutive times from February 2001 to June 2004) in which our MPC held this cup. If by February 2007 the JCC is with either Khandallah or Masterton, these two clubs will have had the cup between them for a staggering six years. Is this within the original spirit of the JC competition? (see comment 2)
I only know of the game of Go where 5.5 bonus points are given to the player with the second move, to nullify the mathematical advantage of the player with the first move (incidentally, the half point prevents a drawn game).
Anyway, lets not get too technical, but it would mean that the JC Cup moves around the clubs more, as it should. For "new" clubs such as Horowhenua to come all the way down to Khandallah or Masterton, and not win a single game is not encouraging and may lead to the demise of the JCC. The JCC is not the World championship - where is our Kiwi sense of Fair Go gone? I believe that a points handicap for the home team can only be good for the JCC Cup and Petanque in general within our Wellington region. Thanks for your input. -Tom van B.

Comment 2 During the Thursday 23 November 2006 Special JCC Meeting held in Wellington, Peter Dennett, co-founder of the trophy with Gerald Bryan of Hataitai outlined the background and how the challenge came about. The cup was donated by Jeff Kennedy of Café L’Affare.
Peter clearly outlined that according to the original intentions: "after a set number of successful defences the holding club must take the cup on tour". This is a similar idea and serves the same purpose of introducing Fair Play. Why this part of the JCC Charter is ignored, I do not know. The child will not let go of the toy! -Tom.
