This was one of the most popular wins I have witnessed for some time. The piste was inundated with wellwishers after the final boule.

Joan and Claire richly deserve this win. They have been so close so often, having played in numerous semi finals and finals. I think they are the first Masterton team to win this tournament.

Although I am biased because i belong to the Masterton club, I have to say this was an outstanding tournament. Club Captain Alison Priddle and her team of helpers ensured the smooth running of the weekend. It was one of the most fun, relaxing, enjoyable, hospitable tournaments I have seen for a long time and that is what our sport should be all about. Maybe we need more tournaments just like this and forget about having national bodies and regional delegates and all the stuff that goes with it.

How about having regional champs and the winners of each region meet to play for the champion of champion trophy to make them the national champs. Instead of all these qualifying tournaments that are full of rules and regulations, have more tournaments just like we have witnessed in Masterton and get back to the basics of how it used to be 14 years ago when I first started playing. We might even see more new members in our clubs if we did that.
