New Blog Name

30/01/07 Today our Masterton Petanque Club received a demand from a PNZ representative, to remove from our Blog ("by the end of the day") a piece written by Graeme Burnard (see below).

I am not surprised that Khandallah has defaulted from the summer league due to not having enough players. This same problem was the reason there was such a debacle over the JC competition. It is a shame that this decision was not made before the summer league tournament started, to save the draws having to be redone. Does this mean there will be more byes. The yearly calendar is out early enough for clubs to be able to plan far enough ahead. Maybe there is too much on the calendar. Maybe this is why PNZ have chosen to have their AGM in Wellington on the same weekend as the Masterton WBS tournament. This tournament is on the same weekend every year and has been on the calendar for many months, so why would PNZ choose to have their AGM that weekend. Is it because there were no alternative weekends or should I be mischievous and suggest that with a major tournament on, the number of people able to attend the AGM would be reduced and any controversy that might arise would be avoided. Sadly it is also stopping some of the top players in the region attending the WBS tournament because of their commitments with PNZ.

Graeme Burnard

Committee members of our Masterton club have had letters from PNZ and WPA plus a number of phone calls over the last 10 months, with PNZ and WPA expressing their dissatisfaction about content on our Blog. At no point have I (as editor of the Blog) been approached by PNZ or WPA (see also item 02/03 on this PAGE. Today our club received two calls, one at 22:30. Phoning people at that time of day is in my view not proper behaviour.

Today's demand was that Graeme's piece be removed by tonight. I think it is not right that our committee members are subjected to this sort of pressure each time someone's opinion does not suit PNZ or WPA. The simple name change of our Blog from "Masterton Petanque Club" to "NZ Petanque Club" will remove this difficult situation. Our Blog has now got more leeway as it is no longer directly associated with any particular club.

Note: I was very angry about this on the day. The irony is that I had removed the item during the morning (before I became aware of the PNZ demand) as I had just received three new items to go onto the Blog. I selected that item to go off to make room, as it was already permanently recorded on the Wiki.

If anyone has an issue with content, please follow the simple complaints procedure as outlined on the disclaimer page (see link below).

I will write more as soon as I have some time, but this should explain the change of name. It's not a big deal. -Tom
