PNZ Candidates for 2009

Candidate for President – Bryan Wells
Club - Horowhenua
Candidate Statement
I am the current CEO of Petanque New Zealand. In the less than two years I
have been in this appointment I have focussed on trying to give the sport a
sound administrative base, and taking a more professional and business-like
approach to some of its problem areas.
My primary focus has been:
1. The provision of a structure for the training and qualification of umpires.
2. A structure for the training and qualification of coaches.
3. The development of an objective and transparent process for the
selection of our national teams at all levels of our sport – the Open, the
Seniors and the Youth areas. I believe all these processes are now in place and are well on the way to being embedded into our sport in New Zealand.
At the start of my tenure as the CEO of Petanque New Zealand I signalled
that my focus would be unashamedly inwardly focussed on the local national
scene, until I could be assured that we had the building blocks in place to
ensure that the national teams we sent overseas were well selected, well
coached and well managed. I believe we have achieved these aims, and it is
now time for us to start looking outwards to the Australasian scene and
beyond. I believe all these processes have also benefited the ordinary club
player by placing coaches and umpires at club level, to allow all players to
improve their skill levels and knowledge of the game, should they wish to do
so.
If elected to the position of President of the PNZ Board, I will continue with
these developments within NZ; and with an emphasis on the development of
the relationship with Australia and the Asian/Pacific areas in particular.
Candidate for President – Lorraine Brock
I am a member and Treasurer of Kennedy Park Petanque Club in Auckland.
I have been involved in various petanque administration roles for many years
and feel I have the right attributes to lead Petanque New Zealand going
forward.
My roles have included
• President of the Auckland Petanque Association for 3 years – the
maximum term
• Organised and successfully run the New Zealand Open
• Represented Auckland – later Upper North Island - on the PNZ
National Council
• Currently the Chairperson of the PNZ National Council.
My husband, daughter, and “son in law” are all involved in petanque so I have
good family support.
Director, Player Development - Graeme Morris
Club: Masterton
Candidate Statement:
Previous experience on the PNZ committee (1999-2006), during which I served
as treasurer, vice president, president/CEO (5 years), team manager to 5 World
Championships, 2 Oceania Championships and selector in 2004/2005, has given
me an excellent background for the position of Director-Player Development. I
am currently the PNZ Coaching Co-ordinator for the lower North Island.
I am passionate about our sport and I believe the experience I have listed above
gives me a great understanding of how petanque works internationally and also
have a close affinity with all petanque players in New Zealand both social and
competitive (junior and senior).
Vice President – Paul O’Connor
Club: Herne Bay (Auckland)
Candidate Statement:
I will be looking at creating a Formal framework for Petanque NZ. This will
include looking at the current Goals and Objectives together with all policies,
procedures and internal controls, with a view to strengthening what we have
or writing new ones where we do not have such.
This will ensure that all member clubs and members separately have
knowledge of what should happen and communication (regular) to ensure that
it is happening. This will also mean that Petanque NZ will have to improve it’s
communication to ensure that the above happens and that all Regional
boards together with clubs will need to advise Petanque NZ of what is
happening within their representative regions.
Finally I intend Petanque NZ to have a much closer relationship with SPARC
so that petanque can remain an accepted, growing, successful and official
sport within New Zealand.
08/01/2010 editors note: It has been kept hush-hush by PNZ, but I have learned that Paul has resigned from the PNZ board over the frustrations outlined by Dirk in his 2009 Open letter.
Director, Sport Development - Dirk Winnie
Club: Park Ave & Khandallah (Wellington)
Candidate Statement:
So what is it that you want?
Honesty, transparency, open communication, innovation?
I won’t promise you that I have the power to make decisions that will keep
every player in New Zealand petanque happy, however I will listen to your
desires and attempt to work with others on the PNZ to deliver the best system
that we can.
I have been involved in the administration of the sport on a regional level for
about the last 10 years.
07/01/2010 Editor update: Unfortunately 2009 has been really frustrating for Dirk and the other board members (see 2009 Open Letter).
Fay Doyle
Candidate – Director Membership Services
Club - Kapiti
Candidate Statement
I have played petanque since 1997 when we moved to Raumati. I served on
the Committee of the Kapiti petanque Club and was president for two years
and later Club captain for a year. I was elected as President of the WPA in
2006 and 2007. I was then elected to the Board of PNZ where I will serve until
the new structure comes into place after the Annual General Meeting.
I have a background in administration and would use my skills to develop the
game and encourage clubs to take advantage of the programmes being
introduced to assist players.
Diane Findlay
Candidate – Director Membership Services
Club: Christchurch
Candidate Statement
I have one major talent – I organise. Serving on the PNZ Executive from
1999-2001 and 2008 –2009, I created and maintained the original NZ Club
database and bring commonsense to the Board.
My objectives are:
1. To do my best for all PNZ members fostering liaison between PNZ and
clubs, informing Clubs of current and future developments through the
website and PNZ magazine, to personally visit Clubs, listen to
members and bring their voices and visions to the Board
2. To promote and encourage the development of Senior and Youth
petanque
3. I am not interested in factions and self-interest groups. My aim is to
represent and be of value to all NZ petanque players.

It is a shame Lorraine has not found it necessary to provide us with her views of the way ahead for our game.

One of the candidates states “....I am not interested in factions and self-interest groups....”.
What does this mean? What is a “faction” and what is a self-interest group? Could any group be seen as a faction with self-interests? Is a group whose actions or views we do not agree with, a factional group with self-interests?
