"New Zealand won the fourth trans-Tasman Petanque Challenge held at Levin at the weekend (May 13 and 14), to reclaim the trophy that has been held by Australia for 2 years.

Two teams of six men and six women from each country competed in 2 rounds of Doubles and Triples over the two days in cold showery weather. New Zealand had a handy lead at the end of play on Saturday, and consolidated that position on Sunday, needing only one win from the first round of Triples to take an unassailable lead. That win was achieved by the women’s team of Barbara Johnston, Joanne Evans and Sharon Cannon, with an emphatic 13-2 win over their Australian counterparts.

The New Zealand team won the Doubles matches 22 games to Australian’s 14 and the triples 9 games to 3.

In the Senior Division New Zealand dominated throughout and took an unbeatable lead early in the second round of Doubles on the Sunday. The team won 20-10 in the Doubles and 7-1 in the Singles, with the doubles combination of Trevor Neilson (Rotorua) and Reed Jamieson (Christchurch) going through the weekend unbeaten.

New Zealand teams:

Ian Baker, Roberta Campbell, Sharon Cannon, Joanne Evans, Christian Fouquet, Barbara Johnston, David Lippard, Laurel Priestley, Michael Rocks, Bethne Rouse, Richard Swaney, Dirk Winnie.

Senior:

Claire Bradburn, Marie Fenton, Dawn Gardner, Doug Hay, Rex Hayes, Pat Jamieson, Reed Jamieson, Terry Lambert, Margaret Maher, Trevor Neilson, Jean Parley, Bill Peachey."
