PETANQUE NEWS

June, 2009

Welcome to “Petanque News” designed to keep you up to date.

Congratulations

To Otaki for winning their Jacques Cochonnet challenge against Park Avenue and holding it against Masterton. Their next challenger is Silverstream at Otaki.

News from the WPA Meeting

Umpiring

It was great to see so many people do the Club umpires exam. We hope most will decide to move up to the Regional umpiring level.

Regional Awards

Michael Rocks told the WPA meeting that he with Bernadette Lawton were the selection panel that reviewed the Regional Awards nominations. Michael said the standard of information varied considerably and that possibly some entries would have been more suited to another category. It was decided that the awards would be announced and the certificates presented on Sunday 9th August at Kapiti during a break in the final round of the Winter Doubles.

Finance

♦    The Members agreed that Clubs would be paid $50 per day for hosting major events & $25 for minor(based on under30 players)events.

♦    Entry fees for WPA events will be set at $10 per player per day for Regional Championships, Women’s Tournaments and the Open Triples. $10 per player for entry into the Winter Doubles, $60 per Club for the interclub competition and $5 per player per Club for the Champion of Champions

♦    Non-playing umpires re-imbursements will be caped at $15 per day

♦    Next years representative grants will be capped at 20% of the gross tournament entry fees and paid at the end of the year.

Strategic Forum

Only four clubs have given names to Michael Rocks for the Forum on 4th July. Three others may attend. This is a poor response to an initiative that should help our sport move positively into the future. All clubs should be represented. It is only one day in many years.

Coaching

A recent training session at Park Avenue involving 33 players was very successful and resulted in several groups being set up throughout the region with the aim of regularly practicing together. The groups are Wanganui, Kapiti – Horowhenua, Wellington Central, Hutt Valley and Masterton. There will be two more sessions open to all players within the Wellington region, the next being at Kapiti on Saturday 11th July, 9am until 1pm. There is a charge of $5 which will be put towards a regional representation fund. All Qualified coaches are invited to attend with the expectation that they will go back and work with their club players on the skills covered at the session.

Winter Doubles

Weather forecasts prior to the second round of Winter Doubles, due to be played at Park Avenue, was for heavy rain. The Tournament subcommittee decided, based on that information that it would be wise to cancel. The weather forecasters were wrong and we could have played! Do we listen to them next time?

It's great president Claire Bradburn has provided us with news that is either not on the Web, or is not accessible by people without access to the internet. I have placed her newsletter on our sponsored Wiki to show how she could easily fix the typos, and users could simply go to the bottom of the page and click on "Printable version". This would allow copies to be printed and put on club notice boards. All good news.
