The Hawkes Bay Summer Doubles

2006 Six teams from Masterton took part in this annual event in the sunny Hawkes Bay. Forty-four teams with a good number from Auckland participated during the weekend. What follows would have to be a New Zealand first: Masterton managed to win all three sections Trophy, Plate and Bowl! The Bowl was put in the bag by Ralph and John. After that Graeme B and Joan polished off the plate. Alison and Lorraine made sure they came third in the bowl. For the trophy Graeme M and Barb made sure that everyone, and especially our Masterton supporters were treated to a nail biting game. After a shaky start against Lee Taffard and Maurice Belz (both from HB) they faced a score of 9/1 down. However, they composed themselves and took this nerve wrecking game to a 13/11 win!! You can congratulate the players by using the "Comments" link at the top of this page. _Tom.

Singapore International

Claire Wilson: selected for Singapore International Petanque Championships September 2 - 3 2006

World Championships

Barbara Johnston: selected for World Petanque Championships September 20 - 24 2006

Oceania Singles Gold!

2002 Barbara Johnston - Women's Singles Winner Oceania Championships in New Caledonia 2002. With this result Barbara has set many NZ firsts. This would have to rate as the most prestigious result by a Petanque player in New Zealand and certainly Masterton. At the time, I think, Barbara was the only New Zealander who has ever earned a Gold in an international event. We at our MPC are extremely proud that our club in some small way was part of this.

In the quarter-finals Barbara beat Jaqueline Taaviri of Tahiti 13 - 2. Taaviri is the Singles Champion of the previous two Oceania Championships. In the final Barbara met Pauline Toruoura, also from Tahiti, who won Gold in the Doubles and Triples. Barbara went on to beat Toruoura 15 - 10. - Photo is courtesy of Wairarapa Times Age newspaper - Tom.
