Petanque proves popular at Howick

Some say Howick’s petanque players are a special breed.

It’s not that their skills can be attributed to any unusual genetic traits but for some reason, they just can’t stop enjoying the game which has no set season and continues throughout the year.

In fact, they do play all year round - even in the rain.

Longtime Howick player Warren Barrett says there's nothing wrong with playing this game in the rain ... you just need the boules to do it ... although, he says, an umbrella also helps.

But, even if you don't have all the equipment, Warren says, people shouldn't feel deterred from giving the game a go.

"We're happy to loan boules if people need them and tuition is also available," he says.

Howick’s Cockle Bay Petanque Club started about 16 years ago and is still going strong. The club operates on a terrain located between the Scout hall and Windross Restaurant on Shelly Beach Parade.

With summer hours now in force, players come together on Wednesdays and Sundays at 5pm. Dress is always informal and new participants are welcome to join in the fun.

To help new participants the club, which has a steady membership of over 50 players, has a random system for selecting teams which means the better players become more evenly distributed across different sides.

Petanque is popular with older players on a regular basis but there is increasing interest from secondary schools which have their own competition.

Warren says efforts were recently made to introduce the game at Primary school level through John Walker's Find Your Field of Dreams Foundation ... "but I don't think they really found it cool enough."

In spite of this Howick club members are still keen to introduce the game to anyone and, says Warren, "we'll welcome anyone who's keen to give it a go."
